Today I answer some questions about how what mobile coverage is really like in the mountains.
You may not be able to use a mobile phone on the mountain. This is because telecommunications networks are not extended to everywhere and that there are very great distances between coverage in this kind of terrain. There is better coverage near cities and along busy roads. Most often, Telia has the best coverage when it comes to more remote locations.
When I walked St Olavsleden there was coverage all the way from Sundsvall to Trondheim, which meant that I could update blog and social media live all the way. But in Abisko and along Kungsleden in Sweden’s northernmost parts, it is longer between the stations and after Kebnekaise somewhere it was a radio blackout. The same thing was true for the SJ train to Åre. It became a practical exercise in Hikefulness.
Keep in mind that:
- The mobile phone is sensitive to cold
- Card papers are great – but also take with you physical map and compass and know how to use it
- Read on about mountain safety before you go out
